Brought to Greece by immigrants from Asia Minor in the early 20th century, the bouzouki quickly became a central feature in Greek music, and about 50 years later, it made its way to Ireland, where it enjoys similar popularity. The main physical differences between the two models are the more rounded shape and flat back of the Irish bouzouki, versus the teardrop shape and rounded back of the Greek bouzouki.
